BEGINNING THE FIRST TRANSCAPES PAINTING IN 1980
Barry was brought up where the Roman Dere Street and the Eighteenth Century Lead Road cross, near Stocksfield in Northumberland. For over thirty years he has used the area as inspiration for an ongoing series of paintings and poems that celebrate the passing of seasons, decades and generations . The anthology Transcapes was published in 2017.
In the 1980's Barry was commissioned to paint a variety of different murals. The 12' x 8' mural illustrated above was one of two painted for the Bede Monastery Museum in Jarrow. The mural depicting a day in Anglo-Saxon Gyrwy (or Jarrow) hung in the museum restaurant for many years.
Barry's work has featured as part of many group shows and several one man exhibitions over the years. His very first solo exhibition was at the Jarrow Hall Gallery in May 1983. (Thank you Lloyd Edwards for that opportunity).
The theme of edges and forgotten spaces is a recurring theme in the artists work. The Each Moment ... series deals with corners glimpsed randomly in old transport photographs. The work formed part of the artists M.A. final show and was exhibited in Newcastle and London in 1997. The painting pictured above was part of the series and won first prize in the local New Festival of Art in 1999.
In 2001 Barry founded Arts Advance, a small community arts project based in South Tyneside. Over the years, with the help of friends and volunteers, the project engaged very many local people in enjoyable arts and heritage activities. The 3-year Words From The Wise project, sponsored by the Local Heritage Initiative and Nationwide Building Society, involved over 200 older people in gathering oral and written history. Other projects included artists and poetry worshops and the long running Arts Advance Writers' Group.
The Arts Advance Press has published 15 local titles.
