The 14th Century Gatehouse of Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland 2003
From a distance the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle, sitting on a natural basalt promontory, looks like an uneven rip in the Northumbrian landscape. I visited the castle to do this drawing on a windy October day. The one and a half mile walk along the storm lashed coastline sets the scene, as the castle’s dramatic 14th Century Gatehouse looms toward you. From the battered and weather beaten remains, you can well imagine being an ancient traveller walking towards the imposing building and the feeling of safety to be found within its walls.
The original A2 (420x594mm) indian ink drawing is available to purchase. Please email me for details.
