MARQUES
I
love to look at car adverts from the 1960’s. Particularly the carefully
staged black and white publicity photographs from that era.
Sometimes
they were taken in prestigious locations, such as stately homes or picturesque
marinas, suggesting the purchase of that model of car could take you closer
to a better lifestyle.
Sometimes
the cars were posed outside factories or shopping centres to emphasise
the practicality of the design, the cubic capacity and the robustness
of the build. The world of advertising all seemed much simpler and more
direct in those days.
Another source of
fascination is the wonderful names that were given to cars in the 60’s.
Oxford, Cambridge, Gazelle, Imp, Snipe, Westminster, Hunter and so on.
They all conjure up exciting or romantic pictures in your head.
I like the
backgrounds of these publicity shots. I love the names of the cars. These
paintings are a fusion of the two. Then, something mysterious happens
– In each picture a new world is created, full of myths questions
and possibilities.
