Words from the Wise
Many people still remember the dramatic closure of Palmers Shipyard in Jarrow which employed almost 80% of the working population up to the 1930’s.
The yards closure and subsequent lack of employment, led to a period of great hardship at the time and to the organising of the now famous Jarrow March of 1936.
In 2002, Arts Advance embarked upon the Words From The Wise project, which aimed to document the everyday lives of local people through the Twentieth Century and preserve their stories and memories forever.
The project
lasted for three years and involved collaboration with the Pluto Theatre Company
who devised a spectacular Music Hall show starring local actors, including
Harry Herring and Helen Russell. The show was toured around various venues
in Jarrow and Hebburn. A week later Arts Advance returned to each venue when
the audience became the stars of the show and hours of reminiscences were
caught on tape.
Specially printed booklets also allowed many people to write their memories down. At the end of the project a fully illustrated 32 page book, an audio book on CD and a DVD were produced and given back to the participants.
