Observing Buildings
In Spring 2004, we invited local artists and writers to take a more personal look at buildings in South Tyneside which interest them. The result is a 32 page publication that proves it is not always architectural or historical significance that makes our buildings fascinating.
Among
the contributors is Carla Powell, fifth generation of the well-known local
fairground family, describing the appeal of the fairground structures from
a different perspective, illustrated with some historic old family photographs.
Also
featured is Jeanette Dunn’s beautifully illustrated article about the
Ingham Infirmary in South Shields and Alan White's Bede's Bunker and Artyfacts!
Which describes the early days of an old air raid shelter in Jarrow and its
transformation into an internationally renowned art gallery.
The Alkali
Pub, East Jarrow features in Observing Buildings. © Inartform Ltd.Other buildings featured include, The Jarrow Cinemas, Shields Gazette Building, The Gaslight Pub, Westoe Rd Baptist Church, Sir William Fox Hotel, Ann Street, Hebburn, The Staiths Masters House, Trinity House, Laygate.
