Five Times
We asked 20 imaginative people from various walks of life to picture themselves in Jarrow during one of five important events in the town's history and describe their reactions to that day on a postcard.
The Five Times we chose were:-
- 685 A.D - On a spring day in 685 there was a dedication ceremony to at the monastery in Gyrwy (Jarrow) the same year a boy entered the monastery later to be known worldwide as St. Bede The Venerable, Father of English learning.
- 870 A.D- On a spring day in 870 the Vikings launched another raid on the monastery at Jarrow causing its inhabitants to flee in terror.
- 1852 - On a summer day in 1952 The ‘John Bowes’, a collier built from iron, with water ballast tanks rather than chalk and fitted with an engine (all three major innovations) was launched at the towns Palmer’s Shipyard -soon to gain a reputation as one of the best in the world.
- 1906 - On a summer day in 1906, In a small two roomed house near the noisy, smokey staithes at Tyne Dock, near East Jarrow , an unmarried woman gave birth to a girl who grew up to be one of the worlds greatest storytellers - Catherine Cookson.
- 1936 - On an autumn day in 1936, after the closure of Palmer’s yard and with the towns unemployment rate at 80%, 200 men set off from Jarrow to march to London with a petition—they also marched into the pages of history in the Jarrow Crusade.
